We’ve come a long way since January when the first positive case of COVID was reported in the US. Now, nearly eight months later, with restrictions slowly lifted, the end still seems far away.

But your business cannot be shut down forever. Sure, telecommuting has gained momentum during these unprecedented times. But for certain businesses, implementing work from home is simply not feasible. Your business may require collaborative efforts that are not possible over video calls, or employees may need special equipment that’s not available at home. If you are planning to resume in office work, implement these precautionary measures.

  1. Say Goodbye to Open Floor Plan
Many modern offices opt for an open floor plan that encourages collaboration and makes space feel larger. But an open plan makes an unsuitable office space in these unprecedented times. Involve commercial general contractors to create separate working spaces.
  2. Equip for VIrtual Collaboration
Even if everyone is working in the same space, it’s not a good idea to huddle in a conference room for team meetings. Maintaining at least a 6-foot distance is important. Equip your office with the right tools for virtual collaborations. You may require new AV equipment along with changes to window treatment and other improvements.
  3. Install Hand Sanitizer Dispenser
Install touchless hand sanitizer dispensers at the entrance as well as throughout the office. It’s also a good idea to install touchless faucets and soap dispensers in the bathrooms.
  4. Make Masks Mandatory
In a busy workplace, it can be difficult to maintain a 6-foot social distance at all times. Situations, like employees passing each other in the hallway or taking the elevator, are inevitable. That’s why it’s important to wear a mask at all times. Making masks mandatory may not be welcomed by everyone, but it’s the need of the hour.
  5. Routinely Sanitize Various Surfaces
If you didn’t have an in-house cleaning crew before, then now is the time to do that. Your office cleaning crew should routinely sanitize various surfaces, especially those touched by several people like elevator buttons and bathrooms doors.
  6. Upgrade HVAC Systems
Most HVAC systems recirculate indoor air to keep a space warm or cool. Upgrade your HVAC system by incorporating systems for regular air filtration. You can also install equipment for Ultra Violet disinfection to kill the contaminants in the air.
  7. Remodel Narrow Hallways
Narrow hallways, waiting rooms, and other high-traffic areas require your special attention. Hire commercial remodeling contractors to install new carpeting with well-marked signage to help employees maintain social distance.
  8. Upgrade Biometric System
Consider replacing the finger touch biometric system with a facial recognition one.
  9. Check Temperature
Before an employee is allowed to enter the premises, make sure their body temperature is checked every morning.

The Bottom Line
Considering we have the highest number of positive cases in the world, it’s imperative to strictly adhere to all the precautions to keep your employees and workplace safe. If an employee has tested positive, you should immediately ask the rest of the employees to quarantine to avoid further spreading.
